Before you buy a refrigerated truck, there are a few things you should know. Here are the top seven things to consider before you decide on your next refrigerated truck:
Make sure you know the weight of your load and the maximum weight of your trailer. If you don't know these numbers, talk to your carrier or check with your manufacturer or dealer.
Make sure that you can safely drive the distance between your load location and final destination. If not, talk to carriers about regional routes or try something new like refrigerated freight shipping options.
Consider the cost of fuel for your trip, as well as how much time it will take for the trip to complete (including loading and unloading times). You'll want to make sure that both types of costs are within budget before committing to any particular route or carrier.
There are three basic types of refrigeration used in trucks:
Thermal: This is the most common type of refrigeration used today. A thermal system uses two components — a compressor and an evaporator — to move heat from the inside of the truck to outside air through tubes. The heat is absorbed by this process and then removed from the vehicle with a blower.
Freeze-proof: Some trucks use what's called freeze-proof refrigeration, which means that they come equipped with an auxiliary heater to keep them from freezing up during cold temperatures. This type of system works well for short trips or if you're only making occasional stops.
Natural gas/propane/liquid nitrogen: These kinds of trucks have no compressors or evaporators; instead, they use natural gas, propane or liquid nitrogen as their cooling agent. They're typically used for longer distance routes because they're considered more efficient than thermal systems.
How much space do you need?
The first step is to determine how much space you'll need for your goods. If your products are perishable, it's best to get as much storage space as possible. Otherwise, you'll want to make sure that your truck can fit into loading docks and parking spaces.
Where will the truck be used? The next thing to consider is where you'll be using the truck most often. If it will mostly be used in one area or city, then consider buying local instead of renting from another state or country. It's also important to think about whether or not there are any restrictions on what kinds of vehicles can be driven on certain roads or highways in different regions.
The most important factor when buying a refrigerated truck is its refrigeration capacity. This is measured in cubic feet, and it refers to how much space inside the vehicle is dedicated to storing perishable products and keeping them at the right temperature. If you want more room for your products, look for trucks with higher cubic foot capacities.
