Letter: Democracy in Ecuador

To the Editor:

Re "An Assault on Democracy" (editorial, Jan. 24): When the Ecuadorean newspaper El Universo claimed that President Rafael Correa ordered troops to shoot innocent civilians during the failed coup of 2010, he sued under Ecuadorean law, as any citizen should do when maliciously libeled. The president requested publication of proof or a retraction, saying the charges would be dropped in that event. Neither followed.

Your editorial doesn't mention important details like El Universo's plea to the Organization of American States to interfere, eluding the national courts.
